Have your say on proposed walking and cycle lanes for Khayelitsha

As we come to the end of the United Nations Global Road Safety week, the
City’s Urban Mobility Directorate invites local residents and affected parties
to comment on our intention to build universally accessible walking and cycle
lanes in Khayelitsha to improve the safety of all road users. The opportunity
to submit opened on Thursday, 18 May 2023 and closes on Sunday, 18 June 2023.
Road safety has come under the spotlight this week, and the United Nations Global Road Safety Plan acknowledges that road safety is a shared responsibility. The City's Urban Mobility Directorate recognises that it has an important role to play in that shared effort, and is rolling out various programs to provide safer, more accessible non-motorised transport (NMT) spaces for pedestrians and cyclists, and Khayelitsha residents are encouraged to have their say on the plans for their area.
The construction of the new non-motorised transport (NMT) infrastructure will be implemented along the following roads and streets in Khayelitsha:
• Bonga Drive from Jeff K Masemola Drive to Pama Road
• Aliam Drive from Mew Way to Pama Road
• Phakamani Road from Pama Road to Spine Road
• Makabeni Road from Spine Road to Phakamani Road
• Sizani Road from Lwandle Road to Mongezi Road
• Mongezi Road from Lwandle Road to Sizani Road
• Tabulele Avenue from Pama Road to Ilaim Drive
• Govan Mbeki Road from Spine Road to Walter Sisulu Road
• Walter Sisulu Road from Govan Mbeki Road to Fukutha Road
• Lindela Road from Walter Sisulu Road to Japhta Masemola Road
• Nyanda Avenue from Japhta Masemola Road to Japhta Masemola Road
• Fukutha Road from Walter Sisulu Road to Japhta Masemola Road
• Ntlazane Road from Spine Road to Oscar Mpetha Road
• Msobomvu Drive from Ngcwalazi Drive to Steve Biko Road
• Ngcwalazi Drive from Steve Biko Road to Spine Road
• Pama Road from Mew Way to Japhta Masemola Road
• Idada Avenue in Site C
The public can submit comment until 18 June 2023.
Importantly, the City will also host an information day as follows:
- Wednesday, 7 June 2023
- From 13:00 to 16:00
- At the Khayelitsha Training Centre, Corner of Lwandle Road and Phendula Crescent
Khayelitsha is the biggest township in Cape Town and most of the residents depend on public transport to get around and often have to walk or cycle. The NMT improvements provide them with safe means to access public transport services.
'Another fantastic initiative being implemented in Khayelitsha is the Walking Safely to School programme, also known as the Watch programme. The Urban Mobility Directorate, together with our colleagues in the City's Traffic Services Department, have played an active role since its inception. The programme was celebrated on Wednesday at the Safe School Zones Colloquium hosted by Child Safe SA, who are driving this multi-stakeholder effort to protect child pedestrians in Khayelitsha.
'I'm proud to say that we have meaningfully contributed to this important initiative, and I commend the dedicated officials who have coordinated the provision of a range of engineering assessments and recommendations, along with co-funding some of these engineering interventions, and project managed construction works until the final handover. We have also shared intelligence data on speed, crash, and traffic with ChildSafe upon request.
'The City is committed to doing all it can to minimise the numbers of lives lost on our roads, and there is a strong focus on implementing interventions that enhance the safety of pedestrians, particularly those who are most vulnerable. It goes without saying that a child's ability to safely travel to school and back is critical to his or her best prospects of a bright future.
'We urge Khayelitsha residents to send us their comments and recommendations on the City's plan to expand the NMT network to improve road safety for pedestrians, cyclists, wheel-chair users, people with prams and school children. This expansion includes footways, cycle ways, signage and intersection improvements that are universally accessible. We therefore value any comments and suggestions that will benefit the community as a whole,' said Councillor Rob Quintas, the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility.
